Romance starring Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams debuts with estimated $41.7 million, followed by ‘Safe House’ and ‘Journey 2.’ By Ryan J. Downey

Moviegoers are clearly feeling romantic in 2012. Bittersweet drama “The Vow” was #1 at the box office over the weekend, with the biggest opening for any movie so far this year. Co-starring Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams, “The Vow” debuted to the tune of an estimated $41.7 million while three other movies opened to more than $20 million each during the weekend before Valentine’s Day.
Overall box-office receipts were up a whopping 30 percent compared to the same period one year ago.
“The Vow” wasn’t written by Nicholas Sparks, but its emotional subject matter is comparable with the Sparks dramas in which each of its stars have previously participated: Tatum with 2010′s “Dear John” and, of course, McAdams in the mega-popular “The Notebook.” “Safe House” came in behind only “American Gangster” in regard to opening-weekend numbers for Denzel. For “Journey 2,” which performed better than industry projections, 3-D ticket sales accounted for roughly 74 percent of business.
“The Phantom Menace” jumped from seventh to fifth place on the all-time box-office scorecard thanks to the additional boost over the weekend. The first of the “Star Wars” prequels — and the worst-reviewed film in George Lucas’ iconic franchise — has now made $454.1 million in the U.S.
This weekend’s new releases include the comic-book sequel “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance,” featuring Nicolas Cage returning to the title role; “This Means War,” an action-comedy starring Reese Witherspoon, Tom Hardy (“Inception”) and Chris Pine (“Star Trek”); and “The Secret World of Arrietty,” a Japanese animated movie with new recordings of American actors voicing the characters.

Mary-Louise Parker not stepping in as Gloria Steinem in the Linda Lovelace biopic, as had been reported. By Kevin P. Sullivan

A report from Us Weekly on Friday (January 27) claimed that “Weeds” star Mary-Louise Parker was stepping in to replace Demi Moore in “Lovelace.” However, according to a press release, a different Parker — Sarah Jessica Parker — will step in for Moore as Gloria Steinem in the Linda Lovelace biopic.
Moore dropped out of the film earlier this week after being hospitalized for “exhaustion,” and the search for her replacement began soon afterward. The film, which is currently filming in Los Angeles, stars Amanda Seyfried as the famous 1970s porn star.
On Thursday, actress Chloë Sevigny joined the cast of “Lovelace” as a journalist, sparking speculation that she could be the one to replace Moore. When sources confirmed to Us Weekly that Mary-Louise Parker would take the role of Steinem, this no longer appeared to be the case. Hours after Us‘ initial report, the film’s directors, Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman (“Howl”), confirmed with Entertainment Weekly that Sarah Jessica Parker was Moore’s true replacement, declaring the previous report erroneous. A press release announcing the news was sent to MTV News shortly thereafter.
Moore officially left the film Tuesday amid controversy surrounding her hospitalization, which a rep for the actress referred to as Moore’s decision to “seek professional assistance to treat her exhaustion and improve her overall health.” Since Moore’s hospitalization, rumors have run rampant seeking an explanation for the medical emergency. Claims of drug and nitrous-oxide abuse arose shortly after word of the incident broke.

As Harry Potter weathers his final Academy snub, Hobnobbing wonders if Katniss Everdeen can carry the genre’s mantle. By Amy Wilkinson
Jennifer Lawrence in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate
“The Hunger Games” star Jennifer Lawrence set aside her flaming bow and arrow in favor of a gilded envelope Tuesday morning to announce the 2012 Oscar nominations alongside Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Tom Sherak. And sadly — though not entirely surprisingly for young-adult-literature aficionados — the “Harry Potter” franchise was once again (and for the final time) overlooked for a Best Picture nomination.
Which raises the question: Does the Academy have something against YA adaptations?*
Curiously, adaptations have historically been strong performers at the Academy Awards. Past statuettes have gone to the literary likes of “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” and “Silence of the Lambs.” And this year’s contenders are no different. Six of the nine Best Picture nominees, including “The Descendants,” “Hugo,” “The Help,” “Moneyball,” “War Horse” and “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close,” can be found lining the shelves of your local Barnes & Noble, while five of last year’s 10 nominees were also based on bound works, according to USA Today.
The side of the equation, then, troubling Academy voters seems to be the “young adult” variable. Though to be fair, there’s not much of a precedent for awards recognition seeing as mining teen lit for film fodder is a relatively new phenomenon. Sure, there are exceptions like S.E. Hinton’s “The Outsiders” (made into a film all the way back in 1983, starring Matt Dillon and Patrick Swayze), but for every “Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist” or “The Princess Diaries” there are tens (if not hundreds) of seminal works, like “The Catcher in the Rye” or “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret,” languishing in pre-production hell or undeserved obscurity as far as film financiers are concerned.
Which leaves us with “The Hunger Games,” the latest YA sensation, which blazes into theaters in less than two months. And while it’s hard to predict the awards-season viability of a movie we haven’t even seen yet, there are at least a few indicators to suggest it could be the first YA novel adaptation to win (or at the very least be nominated for) Best Picture. For one, Oscar’s already made acquaintance with many members of the cast and crew. Our friends at NextMovie crunched the numbers, discovering that the actors and technical experts behind “The Hunger Games” boast 30 Oscar nominations — even Effie Trinket couldn’t turn her nose up at that. And while a film like “Twilight” (which, let’s be honest, won’t be sharing a feather-strewn canopy bed with the Academy anytime soon) focuses on a fantastical, star-crossed-lovers plotline, “The Hunger Games” deals more seriously with issues of life, death and government control, likely giving it more credence with voters.
Though most of the above could surely have been said of “Harry Potter,” it apparently wasn’t meant to be. Hopefully with “The Hunger Games” (and the slew of approximately 4 million teen novels in various stages of adaptation) the Academy will begin recognizing artful YA adaptations as the deserving films that they are. Because we already do.
Do you think “The Hunger Games” is blazing a path for YA novel adaptations? Sound off in the comments below and tweet me @amymwilk with your thoughts and suggestions for future columns!
*Whether, in fact, “Harry Potter” constitutes YA is a topic of much debate in and of itself, though for the sake of this piece, I assert that the final novel’s dark tone and subject matter secure its spot at the teen table.

‘There is nothing you can do here today that will bring Michael back,’ Joe and Katherine Jackson say in a statement read at Conrad Murray hearing. By Andrea Duncan-Mao, with reporting by Gil Kaufman
Katherine Jackson arrives for the sentencing of Dr. Conrad Murray at the Los Angeles Superior Court on November 29, 2011 in Los Angeles, California. <P>At Tuesday's (November 29) sentencing hearing for Dr. Conrad Murray — where Michael Jackson's former personal physician received <a href="/news/articles/1675062/conrad-murray-sentence.jhtml">four years in jail for involuntary manslaughter</a> — a statement from Jackson's parents was read in court. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:708788.id:1673923" width="240" height="211"></div><p> "We still look at each other in disbelief: Is it really possible he is gone? It is simply against the natural order of things," Joe and Katherine Jackson said in the statement, read by Jackson family attorney Brian Panish. "We are not here to seek revenge. There is nothing you can do here today that will bring Michael back." <a href="http://www.facebook.com/mtvnews/posts/199210760161755" target="_blank"><b>Do you think Conrad Murray deserved the maximum sentence? Let us know on Facebook.</b></a> Along with Katherine, Michael's siblings LaToya, Jermaine, Randy and Rebbie were also reportedly in attendance at the hearing. In regards to the sentence, the family said in the statement: "We respectfully request you impose a sentence that reminds physicians they cannot sell their services to the highest bidder." The judge agreed, lamenting that due to a new California law to address overcrowding in prisons, he was unable to sentence Murray to state prison. Stating that Murray practiced "horrible medicine" and had "absolutely no remorse," Judge Michael Pastor declined the defense's motion for probation and handed down the stiffest sentence possible — four years — which Murray will most likely serve in a Los Angeles county jail or on home confinement. Upon leaving the courthouse, Michael's brother Jermaine, when asked if the four-year sentence was enough, shook his head and said, "No." Katherine told local TV station KTLA, "Four years is not enough for someone's life. It won't bring him back. But at least he got the maximum, and I thought the judge was very, very fair."</p>
‘I certainly think she references me a lot in her work,’ Queen of Pop tells ABC News. By Jocelyn Vena

<P>There was a hot debate raging about 12 months ago when Lady Gaga dropped her song <a href="/news/articles/1657726/lady-gaga-born-this-way.jhtml">"Born This Way,"</a> with people questioning whether the song sounds too much like Madonna's 1980s hit "Express Yourself." As the discussion went viral, fans, critics and even Lady Gaga herself weighed in on it. Now, as Madge preps the release of her next album, <a href="/news/articles/1677103/madonna-album-mdna.jhtml"><i>M.D.N.A.</a>,</i> and her film "W.E.," she's <i>finally</i> weighing in on the controversy. Madonna, known for her curt, pithy responses when asked about anyone who might take a cue or two from her playbook, sat down with <a href="http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/2012/01/madonna-breaks-silence-on-gaga-born-this-way-controversy-2020-exclusive-tonight/" target="_blank">ABC News</a> recently and had some choice words for pop's latest princess. "I certainly think she references me a lot in her work. And sometimes I think it's amusing and flattering and well-done," she explained of her <a href="/news/articles/1622985/lady-gaga-madonna-almost-kiss-on-saturday-night-live.jhtml">onetime "Saturday Night Live" co-star</a>. "When I heard ['Born This Way'] on the radio … I said, 'that sounds very familiar' … It felt reductive." <center><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:717952/cp~id%3D1672718%26vid%3D717952%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A717952%26instance%3Dmtv" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="." flashVars=""></embed></center> When asked if "reductive" was good or bad, Madonna replied, "Look it up." The Queen of Pop did call Gaga "a very talented artist" and explained that she thinks that she's making a "statement about taking something that was in the Zeitgeist, you know, 20 years ago and turning it inside out and reinterpreting it." Madonna also addressed her apparent penchant for kissing female pop stars. She recently made headlines when her <a href="/news/articles/1676052/madonna-gimme-all-your-luvin-single.jhtml">"Gimme All Your Luvin"</a> cohort Nicki Minaj tweeted that Madge had <a href="/news/articles/1675587/nicki-minaj-madonna-give-me-all-your-love.jhtml">kissed her</a> on the set of her video. In true Madonna fashion, she brushed it off, saying, "It was her birthday. I gave her a birthday kiss. No tongue!" Of course, Nicki is not the first pop star Madonna has locked lips with. Back in 2003, Madge shared kisses on the VMA stage with Britney Spears <i>and</i> Christina Aguilera. "Nice moment, good kisser. Cool," she <a href="http://idolator.com/6137151/madonna-nightline-interview-britney" target="_blank">remarked</a> of Spears. When asked if she would kiss Spears again, she replied, "No, I already did it. I don't like to repeat myself." For those who may have missed the "Nightline" interview on Thursday, it will air on Friday night (January 13) on "20/20." <center><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:686557/cp~id%3D1672718%26vid%3D686557%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A686557%26instance%3Dmtv" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="." flashVars=""></embed></center></p>
Marina from Marina and the Diamonds posted a message on her official Twitter profile earlier today that claims she is working on a new song with Britney Spears. The message came so far out of left field that I had a hard time believing that it was true. I mean, don’t get me wrong … [...]
I went to the premiere on Tuesday and it was the coolest thing ever. First, the movie is AMAZING and Chris Evans is a superstar. Second, there were so many damn people there it was insane. I have been to movie premieres in New York before and they were nothing like this. I mean, they closed down Hollywood Boulevard. I would’ve taken photos to show you, but the invite said to leave phones in the car. But here’s a photo of me in my cool Captain America 3D glasses:
(Sit down, stop jumping around, it’s an awesome picture, I know. And the quality is amazing. It’s not grainy or reddish… it’s perfect.) (No, it’s not.)
(And you can totally see the Captain America logo on the side of the glasses.) (No, you can’t.)
Anyway, Captain America is pulling a strong 71% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes right now so GO SEE IT! IT’S FANTASTIC!

Madonna has a huge year ahead of her, and she’s already getting some shine. At the Golden Globes on Sunday night (January 15), the pop star-turned-film director nabbed the Best Original Song prize for “Masterpiece,” which was featured in “W.E.,” which she wrote and directed.
Taking the stage in her glittering Reem Acra-designed dress, Madge thanked the many collaborators who helped her write the song featured in her first feature film, which opens in wide release next month.
“This is a surprise,” she told the room, clutching her prize. “Thank you so much to the Hollywood Foreign Press for this acknowledgement. I need to thank my co-writers, Jimmy Harry and Julie Frost, my co-producer William Orbit, who’s not here, whom I adore.”
As her speech went on, she opened up a bit about the creation of the award-winning track, ignoring her exit music altogether.
“I would also like to thank my manager, Guy Oseary, who I spend most of my time beating up on,” she said. “But seriously, he harangued me for the entire time I was filming and editing my movie to write a song. And I said, ‘Please, Guy, I’m trying to focus on being a director and I want people to pay attention to the film and I don’t have time.’ So then I finished the film and I started making my record and somehow magically and miraculously the song emerged, ‘Masterpiece,’ so thank you, Guy Oseary, for being so irritating.”
As her speech wrapped up, she thanked her leading lady in the film, Andrea Riseborough, and producer Harvey Weinstein, whom she called the Punisher.
This is hardly Madonna’s first Golden Globe. She previously won Best Actress in Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for playing Eva Peron in “Evita.” “Masterpiece” is expected to appear on Madonna’s forthcoming new record, M.D.N.A.

Aspiring actor Martin Henderson was partially paralyzed after drunk stranger picked him up and threw him in U.K. By Terri Schwartz

Peter Dinklage might have started off his Golden Globes acceptance speech Sunday night (January 15) with a charming anecdote about his mother telling him Guy Pearce was going to beat him for the best supporting TV actor award, but he ended it on a serious note. The “Game of Thrones” star gave a shout-out to fellow dwarf Martin Henderson but, rather then elaborating, he just said “Google him.”
Within minutes, Henderson’s name was a trending topic on Twitter. The aspiring actor was partially paralyzed on his birthday after a drunk stranger picked him up and threw him while he was having a cigarette outside a pub in the U.K. Henderson blames the English rugby team players who recently attended a dwarf-tossing contest during the rugby World Cup in New Zealand for inspiring the attack.
The Daily Mail reports that he now faces life in a wheelchair after the incident. Henderson was recovering from a 2010 back injury but has said that this injury has set him back in his recuperation. He went on to tell The Daily Mail that he believes this will affect his acting career.
“Every time I stand up I don’t know if I’m going to fall over. I will have to use a wheelchair and I won’t get any acting jobs,” said Henderson, who has appeared in U.K. TV series “10th Kingdom” and “Bigger Breakfast.”
British authorities are currently looking for the man who assaulted Henderson. The incident occurred on October 7, but Henderson’s condition has reportedly worsened as the months have passed. He said that his legs became numb following the attack and that he now keeps falling over, even resulting in a recent fractured arm.
“I guess I was an easy target and the only reason I was picked on was because I am small,” Henderson said in the interview. “People’s attitudes to me when I go out can be pretty cruel. Most are OK but you get the odd idiot who will make fun and start laughing at me. You just have to ignore it, but this is the first time I have been picked up and thrown about.”
Both Dinklage and Henderson suffer from achondroplasia, which causes dwarfirsm. Dinklage was likely trying to raise awareness for a cause that’s close to his heart with the shout-out.

Newt Gingrich is just throwing $h!t at the wall at this point.
During his college years in the ’60s, Mitt Romney spent two years as a Mormon missionary in France. Now, Newt is trying to use that time against his rival as part of his desperate, scorched-earth campaign for the Republican presidential nomination.
Here’s his new ad, titled “The French Connection” …
The crux of the ad – that Mitt Romney isn’t too different politically from failed Democratic Massachusetts presidential hopefuls Michael Dukakis and Sen. John Kerry – might’ve been effective, but Newt is clearly just bitter at this point.
In a parting shot, the voiceover explains: “Just like John Kerry,” the voice in the ad says, “he speaks French too!” Mitt Romney: He’s … multilingual!
Guess he and Jon Huntsman are automatically DQ’d in Newt’s mind.
Tonight is going to be magical episode of Saturday Night Live! We just know it!
Daniel Radcliffe is hosting with musical guest Lana Del Rey and it’s already looking like it will be HIGHlarious!
The actor admitted he was pumped for the opportunity to be funny and after watching this, we are too!

DoSomething.org’s annual list ranks the 20 most charity-friendly stars. By Terri Schwartz

<P><a href="/music/artist/lady_gaga/artist.jhtml">Lady Gaga</a>, <a href="/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a> and George Clooney better have received something nice from Santa this year, because they certainly weren't on his naughty list. Those three toplined <a href="http://www.dosomething.org" target="_blank">DoSomething.org</a>'s Top 20 Celebs Gone Good, the organization's annual roundup of the most charity-friendly stars in the business. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:712657" width="240" height="211"></div><p> This is Gaga's second year in a row at the #1 spot. In 2011 she dedicated much of her time to putting an end to bullying and even started a new charitable organization called <a href="http://www.mtv.co.uk/news/lady-gaga/336330-lady-gaga-born-this-way-foundation-charity" target="_blank">Born This Way</a>. The "Marry the Night" singer did plenty more to help out those less fortunate in 2011, including <a href="http://newsroom.mtv.com/2011/12/12/lady-gaga-nude-sketch-tony-bennett-auction-charity">auctioning off a nude sketch for charity</a> and performing at the <a href="/news/articles/1670610/lady-gaga-bono-bill-clinton-charity-foundation.jhtml">Bill Clinton Foundation fundraiser</a>. However, this was really Bieber's year to shine. He rocketed up DoSomething.org's list from #10 last year to #2 this year. It helps that Bieber donated some of his profits from his Christmas album, <i>Under the Mistletoe</i>, and his self-named perfume to various charitable organizations. Bieber also kept up his work with Pencils of Promise, a group that has built 41 schools in Laos, Nicaragua and Guatemala and was founded by his manager's brother. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:683376" width="240" height="211"></div><p> Rounding out the top five were Will and Jada Pinkett Smith and Leonardo DiCaprio. This was a year for celeb power couples, with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie clocking at #8, Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore at #12 and newlyweds Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert at #14. Other notable standouts this year were Demi Lovato at #10, Lea Michele making her charitable debut at #16, Daniel Radcliffe at #17, Miley Cyrus at #18 and Taylor Swift rounding out the list at #20. <i>What do you think of DoSomething.org's list? ‘The bitch brought it!’ she tells MTV News at the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards about ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ rival. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

It’s no secret that we are very excited about Kristen Stewart’s first big non-”Twilight” movie, “Snow White and the Huntsman,” which made it through to the Sweet 16 in the MTV Movie Brawl 2012. We’re excited not only because Stewart is the star, but because she is playing an action-star version of Snow White and faces off against a very formidable Evil Queen in Charlize Theron.
The last time we caught up with Theron, she hadn’t yet filmed the big fight sequence with Stewart but admitted that she hoped her Evil Queen might get the best of Stewart’s Snow White. “I’m just really, really, really hoping I get to kill her,” she said with a smile. “That is how the story ends up, right?”
We’re pretty sure that isn’t how the story ends — especially since we happened to bump into Theron again at the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards on Thursday (January 12), and she seemed to be changing her previous tune. When we asked the Oscar winner and Best Actress CCMA nominee for “Young Adult” if she’d filmed the epic fight sequence, she didn’t seem too keen to divulge any details.
“Yeah,” she admitted, “but I don’t want to talk about it.”
Why didn’t Theron want to talk about it? Did the fight not end in her favor?
“I don’t want to talk about it. No! No, it’s going to be a surprise,” she said, resisting our probing questions. “Dammit, I give you way too much. People have to pay money to go see the movie to see what happens.”
Theron finally relented a bit and revealed that Stewart’s Snow White does, indeed, kick some ass.
“She was a good fight,” Theron said. “She was a good fight. The bitch brought it! There you go. Now you have something.”
‘Descendants’ star, who bested his buddy for Best Actor, also talks politics with MTV News. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

It’s a pretty good week when you get the chance to talk to George Clooney once. But God bless awards season, because just a few days after catching up with the “Descendants” star on the New York red carpet at the National Board of Review, we snagged some time with him again Thursday (January 12) in Los Angeles at the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards.
As always, the guy was utterly charming. Can’t wait for the Golden Globes this Sunday! We can’t say the same for Clooney, who isn’t exactly impressed these days by all the awards-season hubbub.
“The truth is, I think awards are always a very nice thing, in particular in helping films that are small continue to be made, because they are hard to get made,” he told MTV News. “There was a time when I was younger that the idea of them was intimidating and the idea of these kinds of shows was intimidating, and now it’s just fun, because I get to see people I like that I don’t get to see very often.”
Of more interest for Clooney is the political horserace rather than the Hollywood one. “There’s been a pretty fun debate in the Republican Party; I’ve enjoyed watching. I’m sad it’s coming to a close,” he admitted. “I’m a Democrat, so there are things that are fun about it. Listen, they’re going to find a guy, and it looks like it’s going to be Mitt Romney, and then away we go.”
That’s a much more entertaining prospect than facing off against his Hollywood friends — guys like “Moneyball” star Brad Pitt, whom he’s been faux-battling all awards season. Clooney triumphed this time around, besting his pal for Best Actor at the CCMAs.
“I’m sure there’s a death match,” he joked of the Clooney-vs.-Pitt hype in the media. “Look, he’s my buddy, so everything that happens that’s good for him makes me very happy.”

<P>Just days after debuting his new <a href="http://buzzworthy.mtv.com/2012/01/05/justin-bieber-jesus-tattoo/">Jesus tattoo</a>, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a> is opening up about his views on God and religion in the <a href="http://www.vmagazine.com/2012/01/watch-the-throne/" target="_blank">new issue of <i>V</i> magazine</a>. "A lot of people who are religious, I think they get lost. They go to church just to go to church. I'm not trying to disrespect them, but for me, I focus more on praying and talking to him," the cover boy explains in the issue, according to the <a href="http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/arts-and-life/entertainment/celebrities/136928578.html" target="_blank"><i>Winnipeg Free Press.</i></a> "I don't have to go to church." The singer's strong religious beliefs have always been a part of his public persona. At the 2011 VMAs, when <a href="/news/articles/1669852/justin-bieber-best-male-video-vma-win.jhtml">Bieber accepted the Moonman</a> for Best Male Video for "U Smile," he thanked God. "I just want to say thank you so much, not only to God but to Jesus," Bieber said. "Because I wouldn't be here without Him. He's really blessed me. He's put me in this position. So I want to say thank you so much." The issue hits newsstands on Thursday. Bieber's look was styled by Lady Gaga's stylist and Mugler creative director <a href="http://style.mtv.com/2012/01/05/justin-bieber-v-magazine-mugler">Nicola Formichetti</a>. The photos were shot by other Gaga associates, fashion photographers Inez and Vinoodh. In the issue, the singer also talked about his rise to fame, noting that now that he's reached superstardom, haters and critics have been focused on bringing him down. "Now that I'm on top, everyone wants to bring me down. Everyone's trying to tug at me and take my spot," he said. "Like Floyd Mayweather, he's the best boxer in the world. Now he is a champion. Every time he goes to a fight now, people are like, 'He's going to lose this time.' " As 2012 presses on, Bieber is poised to have another big year, regardless of what the non-Beliebers say. Queen of Pop opens up about the Mother Monster on ‘The Graham Norton Show.’ By Jocelyn Vena
Madonna Photo: Jon Furniss/ WireImage
Here in the States, Madonna sat down with ABC News and had some interesting comments about Lady Gaga. In another interview, on Friday’s (January 13) “The Graham Norton Show,” the singer seemed to take the high road and likened her early days of hustling in New York City to Gaga‘s beginnings.
“When I first saw her, I saw her performing at a very small club in Manhattan a couple of years ago, maybe it was like three years ago,” she said. “I was actually really impressed by her. I thought she was really cool and she did remind me of me back in the day. I liked her rawness and there was something fresh about there and ballsy, and when she spoke to the audience, she sounded like she had a similar sense of humor to me, quite ironic, and I liked her. So I do think she is very talented.”
That was really the end of the subject during their chat, other than when Madonna teased the British talk-show host about naming his dog after her. However, when he said his other dog was named Bailey, she quipped, “Not Gaga?”
Some of that sentiment was mirrored in Madge’s ABC interview, the rest of which airs on Friday’s night’s “20/20.” While she did call Gaga’s “Born This Way” song “reductive” when asked about comparisons to her own “Express Yourself,” she went on to say that she sees a lot of her own work in Gaga’s.
“I certainly think she references me a lot in her work. And sometimes I think it’s amusing and flattering and well-done,” she said, later adding that she thinks Gaga is “a very talented artist” and that she’s making a “statement about taking something that was in the zeitgeist, you know, 20 years ago and turning it inside out and reinterpreting it.”
Madonna is currently making the rounds promoting her next album, M.D.N.A., as well as her film “W.E.”

Bieber debuts ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’ video (and performs with Busta Rhymes and Usher) during ‘Christmas in Rockefeller Center.’ By Jocelyn Vena

<P>Deck the halls! The holiday kicked into high gear Wednesday night (November 30) when New York's massive Christmas tree was lit during "Christmas in Rockefeller Center." Plenty of A-listers were on hand, including Justin Bieber, who premiered his highly anticipated <a href="/news/articles/1673689/justin-bieber-mariah-carey-christmas-video.jhtml">video for "All I Want for Christmas Is You,"</a> featuring Mariah Carey. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:715720" width="240" height="211"></div><p> Before the strings of lights were illuminated, performances from Michael Bublé, Katharine McPhee, Big Time Rush, Tony Bennett, Carole King and Neil Diamond warmed viewers up. But Bieber was the headline act of the night, giving fans some big performances and an even bigger video premiere. Bieber amped up the energy with his hip-hop-ified take on the Christmas classic <a href="/news/articles/1673334/justin-bieber-mariah-carey-christmas-song.jhtml">"Little Drummer Boy,"</a> which included him spitting a holiday-themed rhyme. Decked in all black, the teen star had the crowd screaming. He was even joined by Busta Rhymes, who appears on the <i>Under the Mistletoe</i> cut. JB then slowed things down with <a href="/news/articles/1673032/justin-bieber-usher-christmas-song.jhtml">"The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire),"</a> leaving his female fans swooning as he crooned the holiday standard. He was joined by his mentor Usher for the track. "God bless and Merry Christmas," Bieber told the crowd before tossing to the "All I Want for Christmas Is You" video. The clip features Mariah Carey dressed in a sexy Santa Claus outfit standing in a department store as she dances around singing the track, almost as if she's on display for holiday shoppers. It also sees Bieber and his pals shopping for some choice holiday gifts like high-top kicks. In between performance shots of Bieber and Mariah, a street-corner Santa Claus hands out envelopes to shoppers on the street, teasing an inevitable yuletide party scene. The shoppers are then welcomed into the department store, where Justin and Mariah hand out gifts to everyone. The duo tease and flirt with each other as everyone around them unwraps their gifts. Bieber and Carey re-recorded her classic holiday tune for his chart-topping holiday album, which also features appearances from the Band Perry and Boyz II Men. They filmed the video earlier this month, just in time for the holiday season. <i>Did Bieber get you in the holiday spirit? Let us know in the comments!</i></p>

But other Michael Jackson supporters outside L.A. courthouse tell MTV News ‘justice has been served.’ By Katie Byrne, with reporting by Vanessa White Wolf

LOS ANGELES — During the trial of Dr. Conrad Murray, Michael Jackson‘s fans have been as much a fixture at the courthouse as the Jackson family. When Murray was sentenced to four years in jail Tuesday (November 29), MTV News spoke with those loyal fans outside the court to see if the maximum sentence was an apt punishment.
“Four years — not enough, but at least something,” said one fan, sporting a red jacket in tribute to MJ. “And where I come from, a little something is always better than nothing.” One pair of friends might have been wearing matching Thriller T-shirts, but their opinions on Murray’s sentence certainly didn’t match. “If four years is the maximum and he got the maximum — I know she’s not happy, but I’m happy,” one of the women said, gesturing to her less-than-pleased companion. “I feel like justice was served and that L.A. can now be proud and stand tall.” “It’s better than nothing, but it’s not even close to justice,” said another fan, wearing Jackson’s trademark fedora and sequined glove. “Not only was [Murray] negligent; he let the man die. It’s unconscionable. He didn’t even try. How would a heart doctor not know how to give CPR? It’s insane.” The cardiologist, who was found guilty of one felony count of involuntary manslaughter November 7, was facing up to four years in state prison in the death of the pop icon, but due to recent changes to alleviate overcrowding in California prisons, the judge in the case said he was unable to send the doctor to state prison for his crime. On top of that, legal expert Mike Cavalluzzi told MTV News that Murray will likely serve less than half of his four-year sentence. Those legal loopholes concerned a female fan outside the courthouse, but she was also happy that the maximum punishment was doled out. “The only thing I’m worried about now, with the overcrowding of the jails, he might get one year and house arrest,” she told MTV News. “I’m just hoping it’ll be four years, that’s what I’m praying. I’m just glad that justice has been served today, and I’m glad justice can be served to the family and to the fans, and everybody around today will be happy and celebrate that justice has been served. And I’m sure Michael’s looking from heaven right now.”

On Sunday night, some of the biggest names in the music industry hit up the Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas and decided that sparkles and sequins make for the perfect additions to any red carpet get-up. Well, it is Sin City after all. Taylor Swift always seems to bring some of that Nashville sparkle to any red carpet. She arrived at the show in a pale-hued, sequined Elie Saab gown. Nicki Minaj showed off her signature sense of style in her baby-blue, body-hugging spandex Mark Fast catsuit. Selena Gomez turned up the style dial in a sexy, cut-out black Dolce & Gabbana gown that she paired with red strappy sandals with sparkly bow detailing. Like Gomez, Ke$ha opted for some cut-out detailing in her sparkly, slate-gray dress with tulle skirt. Rihanna looked white hot in her men’s tailored Max Azria suit, which she kept sexy and feminine by not buttoning her shirt all the way. Fergie went S&M chic in her little black bandage-type dress by Hervé Léger. Nicole Kidman also wore black. She paired a casual braid hairstyle with a long black gown and Keith Urban. British pop cutie Kyle Minogue looked funky in her little black lacey dress. Inside the show, Britney Spears sat in the audience wearing a skimpy black dress of her own, her hair in loose curls, with little-to-no accessories. While some stars kept the color scheme low-key, Keri Hilson decided to stand out in her billowy little yellow dress paired with a turquoise-colored belt. Kelly Rowland showed off some of her best assets in a body-hugging, bright pink bandage dress. The fellas also looked tight on the carpet. Joe Jonas wore all black with white sneakers, Ne-Yo paired his periwinkle suit with a Yankees cap and Justin Bieber wore black tuxedo pants with a gold-lamé tuxedo jacket. Which stars’ styles caught your eye at the Billboard Music Awards? Tell us in the comments.
From Eva Green’s witch, Angelique, to what’s really up with Dr. Hoffman, here are the top things we’re itching to see. By John Mitchell
Tim Burton and Johnny Depp on the set of “Dark Shadows” Photo: Warner Bros. Pictures
We are just five months away from the release of the hottest vampire movie that doesn’t sparkle in the sunshine, and we’re starting to get excited. Very excited.
But unlike the other major movies that have earned themselves a column here at MTV — “The Avengers,” “The Dark Knight Rises,” “The Hunger Games” and “The Twilight Saga” — we are still waiting for a trailer for “Dark Shadows.” And, well, we’re starting to get pretty impatient.
So far, director Tim Burton has kept a tight lid on his vampire soap opera — only a few official pics from the set (and one much-discussed paparazzi shot of Johnny Depp in character as Barnabas Collins) have been released. But the new year should bring fresh blood. We know filming has wrapped and that things apparently went so well on set that Michelle Pfeiffer told MTV News while promoting “New Year’s Eve” that working on “Dark Shadows” was “a dream job.” Pfeiffer, who plays family matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard, added that she hopes the film does well so “we can do a bunch of them, because it was such a fantastic, creative group of people.”
Whether that on-set camaraderie will translate into the campy big-screen spook-fest we’re hoping for remains to be seen, and while we hope the trailer doesn’t give too much away, here are a few things we’re hoping to see when it arrives.
1. Eva Green in action as Angelique Angelique Bouchard is the witch who turned Barnabas into a vampire in the late 1700s after their affair went sour. She’s a woman with an axe to grind and has been haunting and cursing the Collins family ever since. So far, the only image we’ve seen of Green in character is the full cast shot, in which she stands in the background wearing modern clothes.
We hope the trailer gives us a taste of how the “Casino Royale” Bond girl is going to play the over-the-top villainess. This is a scenery-chewing role that any actress worth her salt would have a field day with. We have faith that the super sexy starlet will do it justice, but a little advance evidence would be nice. We want to see corsets, blood and maybe a voodoo doll or two.
2. A little insight into what Dr. Hoffman is up to For us, one of the biggest mysteries of the film is exactly what role Helena Bonham Carter’s Dr. Julia Hoffman will play in the shenanigans at Collinwood Mansion. The actress has described her character as “an alcoholic psychologist,” and screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith told Entertainment Weekly that Hoffman “has been there for years, working with David [Collins] but not making any progress. He still claims he sees ghosts and talks with his dead mother.”
Grahame-Smith goes on to describe the character as “a woman with a lot of secrets herself” who is “interested in Barnabas in more than one way.”
What no one has mentioned is Hoffman’s role, in the original series, as a blood disorders specialist who attempts to cure Barnabas of his vampirism. We’ll be watching this trailer very closely to see if HBC is carrying more vials than she is notepads.
3. Collinwood Mansion We got a glimpse of the manor in the cast shot, with its Gothic windows and ancient-looking rugs, but we’re excited to see the rest of the haunted mansion. Overlooking the Atlantic from Collinsport, Maine, the house contains a room that is a gateway to a parallel time, for goodness’ sake. Given that so much of the action of the series takes place within the walls of the mansion, we’re really hoping that Burton and his first-class team of art directors, set designers and cinematographers got it right and captured the regal horror of the place.

‘I’m pretty intuitive,’ actor tells MTV News about why he wanted to work with the pop star on an upcoming basketball-themed drama. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz
Mark Wahlberg Photo: MTV News
Mark Wahlberg surprised movie fans everywhere when he announced plans to hook up with Justin Bieber on the big screen. But when MTV News caught up with the “Contraband” star recently, he explained why he wanted to work with the teen phenom on the basketball-themed drama.
“Intuition. I’m pretty intuitive,” he said of why he thinks shooting a film with the pop star is the right choice. “I see the guy and spent time with him, and you see what he does and how he does it, and then you actually have a conversation with him, and it’s there.” Of course, if it doesn’t come easily to the rookie actor, Wahlberg has a backup plan: “It’s there — and if not, I will extract it.” When MTV News caught up with Wahlberg and Bieber earlier this year at the MTV Movie Awards, they opened up a bit more about the in-the-works flick. “Wait till you see me and Bieber in the flick. Think of, like, ‘The Color of Money,’ ” Wahlberg said of his “old guy” role. “So I get this call from Paramount [with a story about] an old guy and a young guy. I’m like, ‘Cool, let’s get Jack [Nicholson]. Let’s get Robert De Niro. Let’s get Robert Duvall.’ And they go, ‘What about Garrett Hedlund?’ I’m like, ‘For what?’ ” he further recalled. “They’re like, ‘For the young guy.’ ”
Bieber, who previously appeared on the big screen in his 3-D concert flick “Never Say Never,” said he hopes to be on a film set by sometime next summer. And while he kept his plans hush-hush, he added that his team is “working on the script.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com.

The Fighter director David O. Russell has been named in a report filed by authorities in Broward County, Florida, alleging misdemeanor battery on January 2.
Here’s the highly unusual part: It claims Russell may have inappropriate contact with his 19-year-old transsexual nephew Nicholas Peloquin, who also goes by Nicole.
Peloquin is the son of the director’s adoptive sister, Barbara Jane Peloquin.
The document – compiled after the Broward County Sheriff’s Office spoke to both parties involved, including Russell – states that the incident occurred at a gym.
At the Embassy Suites in Deerfield Beach, Fla., “Peloquin stated that Russell’s hand was on her stomach right above her private parts,” the complaint reads.
After the two began discussing Peloquin’s transgender transformation and hormone treatments to increase her breast size, the court documents state:
“Russell then put his hand under Peloquin’s top and felt both breasts. Peloquin said he felt uncomfortable, but did not ask Russell to stop at any time.”
Officials say Russell said Peloquin was “acting provocative towards him” and that he had asked Peloquin whether he was uncomfortable with their interaction.
He says Peloquin insisted he was not. “Being curious about the breast enhancement, Peloquin allowed Russell to feel both of his breasts,” says the report.
“Russell stated [his niece] is always causing drama since the transgender transformation began and has become very provocative and seductive.”
“Peloquin also asked him to ‘pinky swear’ about her letting him touch her breasts.’
A spokesman for The Fighter director said in a statement: “David O. Russell emphatically denies any wrongdoing and he has cooperated fully with the authorities.”
‘All of this comes with the territory,’ Ush tells MTV News of paternity-suit drama. By Jocelyn Vena

Usher might not have known how big Justin Bieber would become when he discovered him a few years back, but he was pretty sure he had found something special.
Since Bieber burst on the scene with his My World EP back in 2009, the 17-year-old has grown up with the world watching. He’s gone from up-and-comer to full-fledged pop sensation, racking up chart-topping albums and a box-office hit and becoming an all-around mega-heartthrob — all in two years. Of course, with the good does come negative attention as well. Recently, Bieber was hit with a paternity lawsuit, which has since been dropped. Usher, no stranger to his own controversies, had these words for the Biebs: “Stay strong. And know that all of this comes with the territory.” Aside from the drama, Usher is especially proud of Bieber’s charitable side. His mentor said he “absolutely” knew the kid from Stratford, Ontario, had a big heart from the start. “To write a check is only half of it, but when you truly take on a responsibility to be a philanthropist, you accept an effort, and I really think that Pencils of Promise is something that has a very bright future,” Usher told MTV News at an event for the charity, noting that Bieber is a only a small part of it. Usher — who appears on Bieber’s new Christmas album, Under the Mistletoe — gives credit to the folks surrounding the teen superstar, including manager Scooter Braun. “Just judging from the determination and the will power of the entire team around Justin, I see a very, very promising [future] for him as a philanthropist,” Usher said.

Much like Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber is treating his crew of Beliebers to some new music right in time for the Christmas holiday. On Wednesday night, the pop superstar debuted a new track called “Be Alright” to a jam-packed crowd during his Toronto-based TV concert special, “Justin Bieber: Home for the Holidays,” which airs Thursday night (December 22) on MuchMusic and CTV. “You might hear this on my next album, you might not, but it’s a song I’m working on. I still haven’t really finished it,” Bieber told the screaming crowd, before unveiling the acoustic tune. “Basically, the concept is: Even though when times get hard with your girlfriend or boyfriend, when times get hard, you gotta just let them know that in the end, everything’s gonna be alright.” Sitting beside his guitarist, MTV News’ #5 Newsmaker of 2011 crooned to the slow jam as the audience clapped their way through his performance, and later on, helped the star sing along to the simple hook. “Across the ocean, across the sea/ Starting to forget the way you look at me now/ Over the ocean and across the sky/ Starting to forget the way you look in my eyes,” he sang. After the holiday special, the teen singer took to Twitter to share his thoughts on the memorable evening, writing, “Tonight was special. No rules. Music, family, friends, fans, charity, and music. Thank you. #HomeForTheHolidays.” “Be Alright” is just a taste of what may come from the singer’s next album release. MTV News recently spoke with JB’s longtime vocal producer, Kuk Harrell, who discussed his thoughts about the pop star’s transition into adulthood. “The only conversation we’ve had about Justin’s album that we’re about to do is it’s really important that it’s the proper transition because we’ve seen him [with] ‘Baby,’ now we’re watching him grow up,” Harrell told us. “And we can’t just throw him into the adult game right away. It has to be the proper transition. There’s a record in between.” What do you think of JB’s new tune? Share your reviews below!

Jeremy Renner was involved in a violent fight last night outside a bar in Phuket, Thailand, TMZ reports, one in which a participant gashed another with a rotor axe.
Local police says the melee started after a man in Renner’s party, Vorasit Issara, dropped a glass on the floor. A group of workers – with whom Vorasit has been arguing – proceeded to attack Issara, Renner and their friends, with the former getting stabbed in the neck and the stomach with a knife.
All six men who initiated the attack were arrested, while the actor’s rep said he left the scene as quickly as he could once the fight escalated.
From ‘Harry Potter’ to ‘Drive,’ MTV News mourns — and praises — the year’s best fictional deaths. By Kevin P. Sullivan
“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2″ Photo: Warner Bros
It is traditional at the end of the year to look back on those we have lost in Hollywood. Usually this means a poignant montage of actors, actresses and crew members during the Academy Awards, but it should also be noted that plenty of fictional passings occurred in 2011 as well.
They may have been memorable, sad, thrilling or even funny, but each movie death meant something, and if we were to look back on the characters that passed away this year, these are the five that would get the biggest applause.
It should noted that this article contains nothing but spoilers.
Sebastian Shaw (Kevin Bacon in “X-Men: First Class”) All it took was a coin through the skull to remind us why Kevin Bacon should be in more movies. His character, Sebastian Shaw, lived large and in style, choosing a submarine as his method of world travel and double-breasted suits as his villainous costume. When Magneto finally met up with him to serve up some revenge extra cold, Shaw ate it in one of the most memorable scenes of 2011.
Fred Weasley (James Phelps in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2″) Many characters didn’t live to see the end of the Battle of Hogwarts, but none hurt as much as the demise of one-half of the ginger-haired duo. George may have lost an ear in Part 1, but he lost a twin brother during the series finale, and we were there with him. At the very least, we can all remember the fun times we had together and rest assured that there is still one genetically identical person walking Diagon Alley.
Beth Emhoff (Gwyneth Paltrow in “Contagion”) The look of terror on Paltrow’s face from the trailer may rank among some of the year’s most horrifying movie images. Beth Emhoff’s death early in the film starts the chain reaction that sets the film’s wheels in motion, but none of the millions of deaths caused by the virus are shown with as much intimacy. She may have been patient zero, but she’ll always be #1 in our hearts.
Shannon (Bryan Cranston in “Drive”) Bryan Cranston’s Shannon didn’t have much time to accept his fate, and neither did we. Before we knew it, Bernie Rose (played by Albert Brooks) had declared it “over.” Even the toughest of moviegoers had to flinch at the sight of the razor blade cutting through the neighborly mechanic’s arm. Shannon added both comic relief and charm to a movie that benefitted so greatly because of it.
Planet Earth in “The Tree of Life” and “Melancholia” The character we’re all closest with bit the dust not once but twice this year at the movies. It’s never an easy thing, watching the planet you’ve grown up on destroyed — just ask Princess Leia. But never has the destruction of our home world been shown with as much stunning cinematography as it was in mouth of these art house hits.
‘We need someone who’s really going to be able to run against [President Obama],’ 20-year-old Iowa caucus voter Emily Clemons tells MTV News. By Gil Kaufman, with reporting by Andrew Jenks

DES MOINES, IOWA — Winning the Iowa caucus is not a guaranteed stepping stone to your party’s presidential nomination, but it’s not a bad start.
“I’ve pretty much decided to vote for Mitt Romney,” Emily Clemons, a 20-year-old clerk at Walgreens who recently moved to West Des Moines, Iowa, told MTV News on Monday night. “I’m kind of new to politics … [but] I think it’s really important as an American citizen to vote and to know what’s going on.”
Read what undecided voters are feeling in the lead-up to the caucus.
Standing inside the Iowa Hall of Pride in downtown Des Moines, Clemons said there were very simple reasons why she was planning to cast her vote with the former Massachusetts governor, who was enjoying a slim lead over challenger Rep. Ron Paul going into Tuesday night’s (January 3) pivotal first voting contest of the 2012 presidential election season.
“There’s a lot of candidates out there who seem really good, but we need someone who’s really going to be able to run against [President Obama],” she said of Romney, who has steadily held a lead (or regained it at points) over his various challengers in national polls for much of the year. “I think that he might actually have a chance. The other thing that’s important to me is that Mitt Romney believes in this country. He believes in what the country represented in the beginning and I believe we need to bring that back.”
She said she knows no president is infallible, but she appreciates Romney’s emphasis on family values and feels that she’s picked a winner in her first time as a caucus voter.
“I just feel confident and I feel like I really am trying to help my country,” she explained, acknowledging that Romney has not always garnered the most press coverage despite his near-steady front-runner status. “He’s still on that steady pace because maybe that’s who he is. I kind of like that … he’s always the same person and he really is out there and tells you what needs to be done.”
An avowed patriot since childhood, Clemons said it was her recent move to West Des Moines and the influence of her many friends caught up in the political game that drew her into supporting Romney. “It was a huge eye-opener for me at the time, and in this next year I’m going to be watching and learning more about it and be more knowledgeable about it,” she said.
Clemons recently attended her first campaign event — a Romney appearance at a local Hy-Vee grocery store that included briefly buzzed-about potential GOP contender New Jersey Governor Chris Christie — which she described as very moving and powerful.
“When I went to the rally and got to see him in person … that inspired me and made me feel a little bit more connected and know what he’s all about,” she said.

From New York to L.A., celebs have plans to ring in 2012 with a bang. By Jocelyn Vena
Kim Kardashian celebrate New Years Eve at TAO Nightclub at the Venetian on December 31, 2010 in Las Vegas Photo: Denise Truscello
New Year’s Eve is the last chance you’ll have to party in 2011. And as the days to plan out your big night begin to dwindle, MTV News is rounding up some of the biggest parties on the planet. From Los Angeles to New York, there’s something for everyone. The Kardashians will be hosting several parties all over Las Vegas. Kim will be at Tao (for a fee of reportedly $600,000), Kourtney, along with the Madden Brothers, will party it up at Chateau Nightclub & Gardens at Paris while Rob has it on lock at Tryst.
Other big Sin City parties include Chris Brown’s shindig at Pure, Mary J. Blige’s bash at RPM Nightclub, Bruno Mars at The Bank and B.o.B at LAX (the club, not the airport). Fergie and will.i.am will both be in Vegas to ring in 2012. The Black Eyed Peas’ leading lady will be at 1OAK, while will.i.am be DJing at Surrender. Professional party rockers LMFAO will be shufflin’ all night long at Haze Nightclub at Aria. Newly engaged John Legend will perform at the Palms with T-Pain and Paul Oakenfold. As celeb-filled as it may seem, not all the stars will be in Vegas. In Los Angeles, Mario Lopez is hosting a party at Hollywood & Highland that boasts performances by Lupe Fiasco and Cobra Starship. And in Chicago, “American Idol” alum Lee DeWyze will be at the Hard Rock Hotel with DJ Chris Kennedy (Chris Masterson) spinning tunes. Kanye West’s plans have yet to be determined, but he recently tweeted he’s looking for a place to DJ right into 2012. We’re sure someone will find a place for him at their party.
New York is the home of all things New Year’s. Lady Gaga has been booked to perform on two NYE specials: the 40th annual “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” and the Japanese program “Kohaku Uta Gassen.” For those who want to snuggle up on their couch and avoid all the partying madness, MTV has your back. This year Demi Lovato, Mac Miller, Selena Gomez, J. Cole, Jason Derulo and more will be on hand for “NYE in NYC 2012,” which will air live at 11 p.m. ET on Saturday (December 31) from Times Square, where the famous ball drops on, you guessed it, MTV. Perez Hilton reports that January 24 episode includes a ‘Beat It’ and ‘Billie Jean’ mash-up. By Jocelyn Vena

“Glee” has already dedicated entire episodes to Madonna, Britney Spears and Lady Gaga, and come 2012, it’s the King of Pop’s turn. A rumored set list for the January 24 “Glee” Michael Jackson tribute episode has hit the Web, and it features some of the late singer’s greatest hits. Perez Hilton reports that 14 tracks have made the final cut, although the list has yet to be confirmed by anyone connected with the show.
The set list (along with who will perform the track) reportedly includes “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’ ” (Blaine), “Bad” (the New Directions and the Warblers), “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You” (Finn and Rachel), “Smooth Criminal” (Santana and Sebastian), “Never Can Say Goodbye” (Quinn), “In the Closet” (Brittany and Santana), “We Are the World” (the New Directions and the Warblers), “Black and White” (Puck), “Ghost”/”Monster” (New Directions), “Beat It”/”Billie Jean” (Warblers), “The Way You Make Me Feel” (Kurt) and “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” (Artie). This is hardly the first time the show has paid homage to Jackson. Back in 2010, the New Directions performed his track “Thriller,” complete with zombie garb, during an episode that aired after the Super Bowl. The show has also previously covered “P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)” and “Man in the Mirror.” Back in 2010, the cast of the hit Fox show had only imagined what it would be like to have an entire episode dedicated to Jackson. “I would love to do a Michael Jackson episode,” Amber Riley told MTV News at the time. “You know, it’s so many [songs that I love], but my favorite song by him is ‘Human Nature.’ I love that song.” While Riley seemed psyched about the opportunity, castmate Jenna Ushkowitz found the possibility a little more daunting. “That’s a scary, scary episode to do,” she said. “[But] that would be absolutely amazing.” Are you happy with the rumored set list? What’s missing? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
